Do You Have A Biz Website Or A Business?

For our first tip I’d like to clear up a lot of confusion about the term “biz.”

You see, while I was doing some keyword research I stumbled across 4 questions that seem to get asked quite often:

1. What does biz stand for?
2. What is a biz website?
3. What does the ending biz stand for?
4. What is a biz domain?

Now for many the answers to these 4 questions are quite simple while for others they may look like the same question using different words.

So today let’s discuss the answers to these 4 questions since choosing the letters to follow your domain name is important.

What does biz stand for?

Biz is slang for business and many may recognize it’s meaning when used in expressions like “show biz.” However since the internet is a global market, the term biz is not known and understood by an extremely large percentage of people using the web.

What is a biz website?

For those who know that biz is slang for business a biz website is a business website. However a website named something like “Biz Marketing Tips” won’t capture the attention of those that don’t know what biz means.

What does the ending biz stand for?

While everyone recognizes “com” as the last 3 letters that follow the dot for a web address there are lots of other choices. And dot biz is 1 of those choices.

Now for many the letter combinations represent the type of site that will be viewed. For example, gov means a government site, info means an information site, org means an organization’s site and edu means a site either for educators or by educators. Therefore a site using biz would indicate either a business site or a site about business.

However there is no real rule for what most of these letter combinations represent. There are school sites that end with dot net and there are business sites that end in dot info. Therefore a business site does not have to end in dot biz and dot biz sites to not have to be about business.

What is a biz domain?

Depending on how you interpret this question there are 2 answers.

If you mean what is a domain ending in biz then read the above answer.

If you mean what is a business domain then the answer is – any website used to conduct business or business relationships.

And while we all know that sites like ebay and amazon are business sites, sites like google, msn, squidoo and many blogs are businesses as well.

So is having a dot biz domain name good or bad for your business. Well a few years ago when it was first introduced it was recommended that it not be used. The reasoning was that everyone knew .com and anything else just wasn’t as good. However with all the new letter combinations available and being used I don’t think having a .biz domain name is that bad.

Yes, having a good dot com domain name is still probably the best but most of the good ones were taken long ago. Having a  dotnet domain name is also very good but unfortunately many of them are considered “premium” domain names and were bought to be sold for very high price tags. So if your chosen domain name happens to be taken for dot com and dot net you’ll need to consider using another letter combination after the dot and dot biz is a valid one to consider.
