How to Use Online Social Networking to Market – Conclusion
Before I wrap up this series on using social networking to get traffic to your website I thought I should share some interesting statistics and an observation.
From everything I’ve read about social media sites, primarily the popular ones like Facebook and Twitter, …
Approximate Statistics:
90% of the affiliate commissions are paid to 10% of the affiliates
90% of the internet marketing social networking is done by 10% of the online marketers using itObservation:
The percentage of those actually using social networking to market is approximately the same as those who actually make money with affiliate marketing.
In other words, lots of people jump into affiliate marketing thinking there’s lots of easy money to be made only to discover that there’s more to affiliate marketing than just signing up as an affiliate. To be a successful affiliate you have to learn many things and put some time and effort into it. And it’s only after you’ve discovered what works for you that you start making money through the affiliate programs you’ve joined.
And the same is true of using social networking to market your website. Creating and joining social networking groups does not get you traffic. You have to join and/or create networking groups that are about your niche and you have to become an active member who interacts with other members and the group. It’s the interacting with the group and it’s members that gets you traffic.
One of the big things about web 2.0 is that it is making our world smaller by allowing more ways for people to interact with each other. And while some say this is good because people are social by nature I think that statement is very misleading.
Yes, web 2.0 does allow more ways for people to interact with each other. And yes, most people are social by nature. However only those who are extreme extraverts, those who are extremely confident in themselves and those who’ve learned to conquer their fears (insecurity, rejection, etc.) find it easy to interact with total strangers on the internet.
Interaction with known friends is 1 thing. Interaction with total strangers around the world is another. Can you do it? Yes, if you’re willing to take a chance. Will you be criticized? Probably not but even if you are it doesn’t matter because you can learn from it.
Like being a successful affiliate marketer getting traffic to your site through social networking is something that requires learning, time and effort. That’s why I’ve written the previous 4 articles where I tried to break it into the pieces you need to know about and I’ve posted other articles encouraging you to become an interactive member of this social networking site. And from the results I’ve seen so far I think the 10% cited as the percentage for those being interactive is too high.
To Your Success,
Susan

Thanks for the useful info. It’s so interesting
Very Good article series. So when are you going to put them all together in a report for us?
Dan Shaw’s last blog post..Are You Frozen in Fear?
Thanks for the comment Dan and I hadn’t thought about putting them in a report although I did try to rewrite 1 to put in an article directory. Unfortunately I kept using social networking too many times and no matter how hard I tried not to my article kept being rejected due to over use of a keyword.
However I could put it in a report if people thought it was worth sharing. Anyone else have an opinion on this? If so please leave a comment. Positive and negative comments are welcome.
Susan
P.S. Dan, don’t you have a better picture of yourself for these comments you leave?
