Increase Web Site Traffic With Traffic Exchange Program – Part 2

While you want to know how to earn traffic exchange credits quickly when you’re using them to drive traffic to your web site, there’s are 8 extremely important things you need to know first. In fact, if you don’t know these 8 things you’re just wasting your time earning credits.

Traffic Exchange Time Waster #1:

Most users of traffic exchanges have a site or program they want to promote. And most of them make the fatal mistake of simply showing their main web or affiliate page in the traffic exchanges. This is usually a complete waste of time and effort.

Why?

Because your fellow surfers are surfing for the same reason you are. They’re not surfing for information. They don’t want to buy or join anything. Your fellow traffic exchange surfers want to earn traffic credits for their own account.! And because they’re in a hurry to get on to the next site to earn credit for their account, they don’t have and won’t take the time to read a long page. I don’t care how well it’s written!

As I mentioned in 1 of my previous articles, I have been using traffic exchange programs for several years to get traffic to my sites. And every time I surf for traffic I see pages so full of words I don’t even read the headline to find out what they are about. Instead, I pay attention to the timer so I can move on to the next site and get my credit.

Traffic Exchange Time Waster #2:

Another fatal mistake of many traffic exchange users is that the page they’re using doesn’t load into the browser fast enough. Depending on which traffic exchange program you’re using, you only have that many seconds (6 to 40) to get your page up and read.

And remember, just because you have a high speed internet connection, not everyone does. Some people are still using slow dial-up and web TV. to surf.

So while professional graphics and video are great for your conversion rate when people come to your site from some other method, these same 2 things can kill you in a traffic exchange.

Traffic Exchange Time Waster #3:

When I surf for traffic 1 of the things that really amazes me is the number of non-existent sites I see. I don’t mean 404 error pages. I mean sites where the domain name doesn’t even exist!

Always check and double check the link you use in a traffic exchange because you don’t want to lose your credits sending people to a non-existent page.

Traffic Exchange Time Waster # 4:

Pop-up and fly-in ads may have their place however that place is not on a page being used in a traffic exchange program.

Why?

Primarily, because they distract the viewer and may keep them from ever seeing your page.

And if you use an exit pop-up, you’re just annoying the surfer. They’re in a hurry to get traffic credits and they’ve decided to move on. So when your exit pop-up comes up they ignore it and move on anyway.

Traffic Exchange Time Waster #5:

Every page you use in a traffic exchange must have a purpose. And that purpose is either to sell something or build your list. (Personally I think having a sales page in a traffic exchange is usually a waste of time however I’m sure there are a few exceptions.)

However, no matter what the purpose of your page is, the opportunity for the viewer to perform the desired action must be obvious. In fact, it must be so obvious that it appears above the fold since most surfers won’t ever use their scroll bar to find it.

Traffic Exchange Time Waster #6:

Even when someone sees your page and likes what you’re offering on your traffic exchange page, they may not take it.

Why?

Because they are afraid it will take them away from their surfing pages and they really want traffic credits.

So rather than make them decide between your offer and traffic credits, have them click a link that will open a new browser. And make sure they know that the link opens in a new window.

Then when they’re through surfing they can come back to your page and take you up on your offer.

Traffic Exchange Time Waster #7:

While many will say that the traffic you get from traffic exchanges is not good because it’s untargeted traffic, I disagree.

Traffic exchange traffic is targeted. You just have to know what the target market is.

Obviously 1 of the target markets is: people who want free traffic.

However, there are others.

Some traffic exchange programs have you pick what targeted markets you want your page shown to. And while others don’t, you can always surf for awhile to see what types of pages are showing to see what the other surfers are interested in.

Traffic Exchange Time Waster #8:

You know those free web pages every network and affiliate program offers. Well guess what.

Many of them, and almost all traffic exchange programs now offer a splash page designed specifically to be used on traffic exchanges. Click here to see a splash page for 1 exchange program.

And guess what else.

These splash pages become over used and over exposed so quickly they’re almost worthless.

So while these pages are well designed and may be very effective when new, after they’ve been available for awhile they’ve been seen so many times by everyone surfing they quit working.

So what should you do to get around all these time wasters?

To avoid all of these time wasters you should create your own effective splash or squeeze page. That way you can have a page that’s small and simple, loads very quickly and your viewer can click to have the main web page (the one with all the details) open in a new window.

What about the squeeze pages that companies provide for their affiliates, Susan? Are they effective? Also, do you know any softwares/services that teach you how to create splash/squeeze pages? Especially one that provides the graphics? Let me know, please if you do.

    Thanks,
    Juanita

      Hi Juanita,

      2 very good questions.

The answer for how effective the squeeze and splash pages provided by affiliate programs are really depends on 3 things:

      1. What the page is offering is extremely important. If they aren’t offering something that high a percentage of the traffic exchange surfers want then the page will not be effective.

      2. How well they are designed. And since most have professionals designing and creating them, most have good designs.

      3. The number of times the page has been seen is also extremely important. Uniqueness counts on traffic exchanges. The more times a traffic exchange user sees a page the less effective it becomes. The viewers who are really interested will take the offer the 1st time they see it and a very small number may decide to check it out after they’ve seen it several times.

As for question 2, off the top of my head I can think of only
1 place that provides an easy way to create splash and squeeze pages
. They don’t provide a lot of instructions however they have easy to use wizards to create pages and provide some graphics. They’ll even give you a gift to give your new subscribers and host your splash and squeeze page. You can see the sample
      sample squeeze page
      and
      sample splash page
I created in less than 10 minutes.

Very good so far, Susan, and as your articles are aimed primarily at newbies and people who have not had much experience with TE’s, I think it would also be instructive to do a bit of the history of exchanges in the context of the changing internet.
A few years ago, exchanges were our primary source of connection, unlike today with the explosion of social network sites. In those days we would take the time to read the pages we were viewing, and we even stopped occasionally to click on banners or text links. Not so now, and in fact there are far less people surfing on exchanges, because there is so much more to do on Twitter or Facebook or YouTube, for example.
I agree completely with your comments about Splash Pages, and we now have one company using splash pages which say DON’T CLICK, as if anybody would waste time disobeying a negative invitation like that. You have to laugh!
Best of luck with the rest of the series.

I was against Traffic Exchanges mainly because of the time required to surf others pages. Since reading this post I can see that participating in a traffic exchange can be beneficial if done correctly. Till now I never knew there was a correct way.

    • Susan says:

      Thanks for the comment Dan.

And yes, just like every other form of driving traffic to your site, you have to know how to play the game to do it correctly. And now that I’ve told you the type of page you need to show just wait till I tell you how to earn those traffic credits quickly.
